Insole-Shaped Pneumatic Feedback for Directional Weight-Shifting Guidance

Abstract

Although weight-shifting is an essential skill in sports and balance-related activities, intuitive feedback for learners remains challenging. This study presents an insole-shaped pneumatic device that delivers localized plantar stimulation to convey directional cues for weight-shifting guidance. It consists of a soft silicone insole with independently controllable air chambers and an external pneumatic control unit. A user study with 12 participants evaluated whether the device could induce shifts in the center of pressure (CoP) in 8 target directions. The results showed that the proposed system produced larger CoP displacements in several directions, especially forward and backward.

In this publication, researchers developed an innovative insole-shaped pneumatic feedback device to provide directional weight-shifting guidance. To evaluate the device's efficacy, Moticon OpenGo sensor insoles were deployed at a 50Hz sampling rate to capture plantar pressure data directly from the participants' feet. The Moticon sensor insoles were instrumental in measuring precise objective variables, specifically the center of pressure (CoP) displacement and circular direction before and after feedback delivery. These measurements directly influenced the study's conclusions by providing the empirical validation necessary to prove that the pneumatic device successfully induced targeted CoP displacements, demonstrating particular effectiveness in forward and backward directions.
