The Institute of Applied Training Science (IAT) is taking table tennis to a whole new level by incorporating Moticon Sensor Soles to improve their athlete’sstroke quality.

Recently, 20 players, 5 scientists, and 3 measurement systems were involved in a complex study conducted by the IAT’s table tennis department, which included Olympic, perspective, and upcoming players in Germany.

The scientists aimed to determine the impact of foot load distribution on the quality of attack shots in table tennis. “Every shot is initiated by the foot contact with the ground. However, technical training often neglects footwork. We aim to provide reliable data on the characteristics of footwork and its impact on relevant performance parameters,” explains Sascha Nimtz, IAT table tennis department head.

During the study, three measurement systems simultaneously documented the players’ movements, with all wearing MOTICON Sensor Soles. The SPINSIGHT elite system measured the target variables of a shot in real-time, while Simi Motion tracked and analyzed the athletes’ 3D movements in space.

“Thanks to the extensive data collection, we can provide players with cohesive information about shot execution and sport motor output, enabling them to improve their shot quality specifically,” explains Sascha Nimtz.

This innovative approach to table tennis training shows the IAT’s commitment to using cutting-edge technology to enhance athlete performance. With Moticon Sensor Soles and other advanced measurement systems, the future of table tennis is looking brighter than ever.
